Joseph Conrad’s progressive ideas about colonialism are instilled into his novella, Heart of Darkness, (1902) through which the philanthropic pretence of the European Colonisers towards African natives is unveiled. The Catholic Church Essay Example Paper The Catholic Church Essay Introduction The Catholic Church was the single most powerful and influential force throughout virtually all of European history. It was the unifying factor of Europe following the collapse of the Roman Empire. Modern civilization exists, in large part, due to the efforts of the Church to civilize Europe after the settling of Europe by barbarian tribes. However significant the efforts of the Church to civilize, the Church eventually lost its purpose, and degenerated into the basest organization within Europe. The goal of the Catholic Church within Europe was to bring about a society that adhered to Christian values and morality. The Church’s initial success in bringing about a more moral society was, however; almost completely negated by its later decline into the very immorality that it had combated earlier.†From the fifth to the eleventh century in western Europe lords and churchmen recognized two main goals: the conversion of pagans to Christianity and the establishment of proper order within the Christian community.† (Peters, 213) The specific morals that the Church hoped to propagate throughout Europe are the basic tenants of every major faith; loyalty, truth, faith, mercy, compassion, the sanctity of life, the sanctity of property and basically being a civilized person. The missionaries roamed the wilds of Europe converting the barbarians wherever they found them teaching morality, and trying to restore the civilization that had existed under the Romans.†The Duty of the rulers of any earthly society, especially Christian rulers, is to curb the baser instincts of fallen human nature and preserve that earthly peace that is necessary for the conduct of the Christian life.† (Peters, 50) The teachers of the Church attempted to reform society by influencing the rulers. By educating the rulers of Europe the Church hoped to bring civilization to a barbarous Europe. In addition many of the lands of Europe came under the direct rule of religious o fficials. â€Å"During the sixth and seventh centuries the clergy assumed more and more of the responsibilities for the civil administration of the cities.† (Peters, 106) By educating rulers and installing Church officials as civil rulers the Church sought to curb the baser instincts of barbarous Europe.Following the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 6th Century Europe was left in shambles. Barbarians roamed the countryside murdering and pillaging. During the 6th and 7th Centuries many of these barbarian tribes began to settle down and adopt some of the methods of the Romans. Christian missionaries saw the opportunity to unite all of Europe under Christianity, and to spread the faith. Missionaries went throughout Europe teaching the Word of God. Often times these missionaries would modify Christianity to make it more compatible with the existing faiths of the barbarian tribes. The dates of many Christian holidays, such as Christmas, stem from the pagan holidays of the day.I n later centuries, while many of the peoples of Europe had officially converted, much of the barbarism of the tribes still remained within the culture. Gregory, the Bishop of Tours, gives an excellent description of the type of sins committed by many of the supposedly Christian peoples of Gaul. â€Å"Lothar seized him, thrust his dagger in his ribs and murdered him just as he had murdered his brother. Then they killed all the attendants and the tutors. When all lay dead Lothar climbed on his horse and rode away, showing no remorse for the slaughter of his two nephews.† (Gregory, 11) The war like and murdering natures of many of these Frankish kings were hard to curb after years of such actions. The Church tried to combat the sinfulness of its converts and gradually progress was made, but it took many centuries.†By the end of the eleventh century, most western European pagans had become converted to Christianity and one of the religious aims of the early Middle Ages had been accomplished.† (Peters, 213) At the same time that conversion was virtually complete, much of the warlike nature of the warrior people were channeled through a unique outlet. The Crusades were used at during the 12th Century to remove the constant fighting within Europe, and instead use it to combat the heathen, and reconquer the Holy Land. Pope Urban II came up with the plan of sending the knights to the Holy Land in an attempt to bring peace to Europe.†Indeed, the first Crusade, which Urban’s plea created, was first and foremost a vehicle for lay warriors to participate in a renewed Christian society in the one capacity for which they were ideally suited, controlled violence in God’s service against non-Christians.† (Peters, 225) Urban realized that war was necessary for these knights, as it was there sole occupation, and they would not be happy without the ability to kill someone, so Urban sent them to kill someone else rather than each other. â€Å"He appealed to a large assembly of laity and clergy to impose peace everywhere in Christian Europe and to turn Christian weapons only against infidels.† (Peters, 225) And so the Crusades were born, and initially they were very successful, both in their stated goals and their underlying purpose of bringing peace to Europe.Even within the Church positive reform was taking place around the time of the Crusades. The Cistercian monks were advocating a new spiritualism that brought the Church back to its roots. â€Å"The care of souls is the art of all arts.† (Peters, 108) The Cistercian’s saw God as being good and gentle, rather than an angry punishing deity. â€Å"This new sense of God’s affection for humanity and the obligation of interior spiritual development was largely an invention of twelfth century Cistercian writers.† (Peters. 223)The Great Schism that occurred in the Church during the papacy at Avignon caused many to question the Papacy for the first time. Christians throughout Europe found themselves divided in what they believed. Many began to question what it was that made the Pope the leader of God, and also what impact the Pope had on their own souls. â€Å"Individual Christians wondered if their immortal souls were in danger should the sacraments be performed by a false priest ordained by a false bishop loyal to a false pope.† (Zophy, 36) These questions were eventually resolved once the Church was reunited, but the simple act of questioning led down the path of Reformation. Once people begin to question the process can never be reversed, and instead of dealing with the issue the Church simply continued to stagnate.During the Renaissance the Church was in the best shape of its existence politically. All of Europe was united under Christianity, warfare had decreased significantly from previous centuries, and the Church was the looking like it was heading to reform. People were beginning to question doc trine, but it seemed aimed towards reform, such as had taken place in the 11th Century. However, instead of embracing the chance to become a truly Christian religious institution, the Church instead chose to lean on tradition, doctrine and its political might. This is the turning point at which all the early success of the Church becomes negated by its refusal to reform. The issue of conflict between science and religion began to become a major controversy, and the question of the cause of the Black Death still lingered. The Church’s explanation for the cause of the Black Death was unacceptable to many. How could God kill half the population simply to punish humanity? People wanted real answers, and the Church came up lacking.Many of the scientific thinkers of the Renaissance such as Galileo and Copernicus were denounced by the Church. Even though their ideas appealed to reason, and rational thought, the church felt that these new ideas could bring into question the authority of the Church, since the Church has always taught an earth-centered view that was different than these new views of Galileo and Copernicus. Both Copernicus and Galileo were denounced as heretics. â€Å"Denounced by the Roman Inquisition in 1616, Galileo was told to abandon and cease to defend and teach as fact the Copernican notion that the sun is the center of the universe and that the earth moves around it.† (Zophy, 313) The fact that the Church refused to accept the possibility that it might have been wrong shows the stagnation and implacability that leads to its failure to maintain its place as the head of Europe.During the Renaissance many new ideas about faith appeared that conflicted with traditional Catholicism. Many more people were educated, and they questioned the lack of knowledge of many of the priests who were supposed to be their teachers. Hitler even became depressed and threatened to sh oot himself because Strasser resigned as a Nazi and went off to vacation in Italy. Schleicher became furious and wanted to declare a state of emergency to control the Nazis, and President Hindenburg rejected that proposal. Scripted by the novelist Marguerite Duras, both protagonists are indeed ‘possessed’ by memories of the traumatic events they have respectively endured, and it is only thanks to a passionate love affair that their captivation by images from the past is converted into speech. It is as if their eroticized body triggers the release of traumatic memories and the experiencing for the first time of how war affected them, although no words were verbally expressed. This opening montage is accompanied by the lyrical voice-over of the lovers, the French woman's insistence she's seen Hiroshima and the effects of the bomb, the Japanese man's denial she ever could. The elliptical, artificial, and literary nature of the voice-over, its load of subtext could summon a certain sadness they both are hiding as a result of their traumas. Transmogrifying the social atmosphere at a certain point of history and the universal quality of love regardless of the national origin, the relationship establishes this by uniting traumatic memories and eroticized bodies routed through another level of signification, which has proved to be the film's most ambiguous dimension. For most spectators, it is the film's recourse to analogy that generates the greatest unease. In a sense, these questions belong to the film itself. The fact that Hiroshima continues to resist a comforting sense of definition almost fifty years after its release may help to account for Resnais’ nervousness when he set off for the shoot in Japan. He was convinced that his film was going to fall apart, but the irony is that he and Duras had never meant for it to come together in the first place. What they created, with the greatest delicacy and emotional and physical precision, was an anxious aesthetic object, as unsettled over its own identity and sense of direction as the world was unsettled over how to go about its business after the cataclysmic horror of World War II (Jones, 1959). As Damian Cannon (1997) expounded, Hiroshima is the very place where the conservation of the event in memory and its refutation in forgetting become simultaneously possible. Elle chooses to tell her story because she is in a place where things can be remembered, and then, ultimately, forgotten. It is important to note that the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima signaled the end of the war in Europe. Elle arrives in Paris (a new place) that very day, consecrating by her displacement her forgetting of Nevers.   The writer Duras explains in her synopsis that because of the very place it evolves from, and in order for Hiroshima to maintain its ties to history, the love story has to precede and subsume the story of Hiroshima. On the other hand, the function of the Nevers story serves to introduce the nitty-gritty understanding of the character of the female lead, Elle. Ropars Wuilleumier (1992) shared that the ‘unrepresentability’ of Hiroshima's catastrophe is transferred onto the ‘narratability’ of Elle's story of a doomed love affair in Nevers. As Ropars-Wuilleumier points out, Lui, the Japanese lover, assumes exactly the position of the analyst in relation to Elle's narration of her Nevers past at the moment when he accepts being addressed as her dead German lover, when he demands of Elle: â€Å"When you are in the cellar, am I dead?† But, consistently with Ropars-Wuilleumier reading of Hiroshima, Mon Amour's analogical strategy, she insists that we should not see this ‘psychoanalytic simulacrum’ as operating primarily on behalf of the ‘working-through’ of the traumatic memory of Elle. Rather, the elaboration of the Nevers story in this symbolism implicitly poses the question of what it means to meander through the legacy of the atomic catastrophe (p. 179-180). In early sequences, when Elle relates the evidence of destruction she has seen on her visits to hospitals and museums, Lui tells her: â€Å"You saw nothing in Hiroshima. You know nothing†. Elle in turn insists that she has seen ‘everything’, knows ‘everything’ and has thus become convinced that she will never forget Hiroshima. But it is only after the transmission of her story of Nevers in three flashback sequences that the film's viewers will realize that Elle has been seeking to inscribe in her memory images of Hiroshima's destruction and its aftermath in order to do battle with the forces of forgetting that overwhelm even the strongest compulsion to remember. Early in the film, Elle tells Lui that they both share the desire to resist to forget the memories that bind them to their respective traumatic pasts: â€Å"Like you, I know what it is to forget†¦ like you, I'm over-endowed with memory†¦ like you, I too have tried with all my might not to forget. Like you, I forgot. Like you, I wanted to have an inconsolable memory, a memory of shadows and stones†. Through telling to Lui the story of Nevers, of her previous love affair love with a German soldier, his assassination by the Resistance and her punishment as a femme tondue, a woman whose head was shaven for (literally) ‘sleeping with the enemy’. With this, Elle undertakes her long-belated labor of mourning. Only as her narration nears completion does this traumatic memory of her German lover lying dead on the Quai de la Loire, which has made Elle captive to her past, achieve full representation (Ropars-Wuilleumier 1992, p. 182). It is only when it achieves representation does the memory in turn risk being subjected to the forces of forgetting. As the film suggests, this is the ambiguous fate awaiting memories of what has unfolded and about unfold in Hiroshima. Clearly, the passage in the final scene, when Elle cries out in anguish: â€Å"Til forget you! I'm forgetting you already!†, we are bound to vicariously feel that she is not only experiencing the pain of progressively forgetting the death of her ‘first love’, but that she suffers by anticipation the pain of forgetting Lui and Hiroshima. As the significance of this passage implies, the memory that possessed her is shown to be somewhat also her tool for her own â€Å"healing process† of forgetting, wherein forgetting is not simply the consequence of repression or social neglect, but something that cleanses you of your past pains and the realization of the necessity of ‘letting go’ of the traumatic memory itself. Thus, through the film's guides us to the process of an individual's compulsion to remember and need to forget. As Ropars-Wuilleumier (1992) explained, â€Å"the horror of Hiroshima is not eclipsed, but it becomes the object of a secret reflection upon the terms of both enunciation and expulsion of the historical event† (p. 291). . In this process, writer Duras sacrifices her agency within the narrative, giving the narration over to setting and story. This is mirrored at the end of Hiroshima, Mon Amour where the final lines of dialogue identify the two characters of the film with the cities they are from, Hiroshima, Japan, and Nevers, France (Sample, 2004). The overall tone of Hiroshima Mon Amour substantiates the thought that these painful memories at hand could whip us terribly with unrelenting repercussions in the future. Eventually, making all of us realize that these shared moments will somehow be forgotten. As a particularly depressing thought, there are at least a few moments of illumination in the darkness of what had caused us pain. Role of Women in China versus America :: essays research papers

Different cultures promote widely variant ideas of the proper role and place of women within a society but I am discussing women in China and America. Is there something significant in the similarities and differences on my list? The American women are totally different from the Chinese women. American women enjoy more personal freedom and independence than women in many other parts of the world. In many places in the world, women are expected to hold marriage and children as their primary goals and interest. Margaret Walsh stated that ?the main activity of these women was domestic, during later stages of frontier development, many were involved in activities such as prostitution? (241). In America, a woman is just as likely to decide that her education, for instance, needs to be completed before she can consider marriage or family. ?In America the women have taken the role of the men, the men the women, and the children are the heads of the households? (Currie 71). I feel that the men should take on their own role because the women should be able to work also even though some people say that a woman?s places is at home cooking and cleaning. The role of women in China has changed dramatically, from one servitude and repression in ancient China, to one of equality in modern China. China women were sometimes subject to their father but when they got married they were subjected to obey their husband without and questioning. ?This study considers family development and attitudes toward motherhood in light of changing roles of women in China. The effects of revolutionary events and government policies on marriage and the traditional family are presented based on interviews conducted in China and a review of the literature? (Hare-Mustin and Hare 67-82). I think that women in any culture should have the same role because it seem like China women have no freedom. Some women went to night school, or worked at the factory until laws were passed to equalize women under the law.

It is generally accepted practice to include a cover (or covering) letter, together with your resume and any other documentation that you forward to the employer as part of a job application. Your covering letter essentially provides an explanation of why you are communicating with the employer. Imagine a prospective employer’s confusion if they received your resume without a covering letter explaining why you have sent it to them, or what position you were applying for. A well written covering letter however can achieve much, much more in assisting you to gain employment. It represents a significant opportunity to create a positive impression with the employer, and to further market your skills and qualifications. Often your cover letter alone can influence an employer to include you in the next stage of the selection process, which is meeting you in an interview. When should I send a cover letter? What is the purpose of a cover letter? A final thought about the importance of your cover letter: The cover letter and the resume should both be stand alone documents and have sufficient impact on the employer to take your application to the next stage. Don’t assume that an employer will take the time to read both the cover letter and resume when deciding which applications to accept or reject. top^ Write about the benefits to the employer Your cover letter is a sales letter; you want the employer to â€Å"buy† what you have to offer. To encourage them to do this, it is essential that you explain how the employer will benefit if they offer you a position. For example, if you have well developed interpersonal communication skills and you know these skills are important to the employer, then say you have these skills in your letter. Then go one step further and point out a benefit, for instance: â€Å"I have highly developed interpersonal communication skills which means that I able to rapidly form effective working relationships with both co-workers and customers†. Employers will rarely be impressed by this; they much prefer to know about the contribution you can make, or the benefits you can bring to their organisation. top^ General guidelines for preparing a cover letter Following are some guidelines to assist you to write cover letters that make a positive impact on employers: Ideally keep the length of your letter to a single A4 page, and no more than a page and a half. Keep your message clear and succinct. Address your letter to a person, not a position. The job advertisement might say to address your  letter to the â€Å"The Human Resources Manager† or other job title. Contact the organisation to find out the name of the person to whom the letter should be addressed. In this way you can differentiate yourself from other candidates, and increase the chances that your application will get noticed. Ensure your name, address, phone number/s and email address are at the very top of the letter and aligned to the right hand margin. Also at the top of the letter, on the next line after the greeting â€Å"Dear Ms †¦Ã¢â‚¬ , quote any employer reference information and/or number appearing in the job advertisement. Set out your letter so that it is easy to read, and that essential information about you can be seen at a glance. The reader will probably spend no more than 30 seconds or so reading your letter before deciding if you qualify for further consideration. It is quite acceptable to use bold or underlined sub-headings in the main body of your letter with information relevant to the sub heading in dot point form. Make the tone of your letter lively by commencing bullet point sentences with action words such as ‘led’, ‘designed’, ‘planned and organised’, ‘implemented’ etc as appropriate. Close the letter with â€Å"Yours sincerely† if you know the person to whom you are writing, otherwise close with â€Å"Yours faithfully†. Sign the letter in your own hand writing, and type your name underneath the signature. Always proof read your letter. Spelling and grammar must be correct. Having a friend or colleague proof read your letter is also helpful. The next topic provides suggestions about the content of specific types of cover letters. top^ Suggested content for specific types of cover letter What you write about in your letter will depend on your purpose. Following are some additional, more specific guidelines for each of the most common situations where you should send a cover letter. These situations are: A position in private enterprise. Here you are responding to a job advertisement placed either by the employer, or a recruitment agency, where you are not required to also submit a separate document addressing the selection criteria. A role in a government department, local government and some not for profit organisations. This type of job application usually  requires you to prepare and submit, in addition to your resume and cover letter, a separate document which addresses the selection criteria contained in the person specification for the role. In your letter you should describe succinctly and clearly how you meet that criteria. Advertisements for graduate positions most often appear in the large display advertisements in the careers or professional section of the newspaper, not in the positions vacant section. A display advertisement will usually consist of three parts – a description of the employer organisation, an overview of the job role and then the selection criteria. The selection criteria part of an advertisement usually starts with a sentence like â€Å"The successful candidate will demonstrate/possess †¦Ã¢â‚¬  or â€Å"To be successful in this role you will †¦Ã¢â‚¬  The focus and main content of your letter should be about how you meet the selection criteria. This is because the decision to hire will be based on how well candidates meet the selection criteria. In your introductory paragraph: Refer to the position, including a reference number, if applicable, and where you saw it advertised. Say that you are interested in the role, and express confidence in your ability to perform the role to the standard required. Then write a sentence introducing the reader to the main body of the letter, for example, â€Å"Following is a summary of my qualifications and experience based on your selection criteria: †¦Ã¢â‚¬  In the main body of your letter: Use sub headings, either in bold font or underlined, for each of the selection criteria, and then detail under each heading the information in dot point summary form about how you meet the criteria. Indicate that you have enclosed your resume which contains further information about your skills and qualifications in relation to the position. The concluding paragraph: Indicate that you look forward to meeting the person to whom you are writing in the interview, at which time you will be able to further demonstrate your suitability for the role and outline the contribution you can make to the organisation. Avoid a weak closing sentence which states that you â€Å"hope to hear† from them à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" indicate in the tone of the letter that you are confident about your capabilities and that an interview is expected! Tip: Avoid doing what inexperienced job seekers tend to do, which is to write about their ability to carry out the described role, rather than attempting to match their skills and experience against the selection criteria. Job advertisement response – roles in government departments/ organisations The content of your cover letter for a position in a federal, state or local government organisation or department will be set out in a similar style to a letter which you might send for a role outside government. You will need to outline in the letter the position for which you are applying and why you believe you are the best candidate for the role. When applying for most government roles you will need to complete a separate, and usually quite extensive document which contains evidence about how you meet the selection criteria. Because you will need to restrict the length of your cover letter to a page or so, your major challenge will to condense and summarise in your letter, information that you will have already provided in this separate document. In the main body of the letter therefore, using the same sub heading and bullet point format as for a private enterprise position, select and write about how you meet 3 or 4 of the most important ‘essential’ selection criteria. Speculative or cold call letter This is an option for finding employment which is sometimes successful. The approach is to write to an employer, or employers, and recruitment agents who operate in your field of career interest, either to enquire about employment opportunities, or to offer your services. This type of letter is often called a speculative or cold call letter because you are not responding to an advertisement, and you may not know if the employer is looking to hire staff. Some suggested approaches for preparing this type of letter are: If you know the organisation recruits graduates for various types of employment, work experience or project work, explain the arrangement you are seeking. This could be for example to seek full time employment, undertake casual, contract or voluntary work, vacation employment, or as part of a university assignment or project which has application to the organisation or industry. If, as a result of your research into the organisation, you are aware that they have a need that you are able to help them meet, outline in the letter your understanding of their need. Then explain how, through your specific skills, knowledge or experience, you can assist. Outline your action plan in your closing paragraph. For example, explain that you will make a follow up phone call seeking an interview and give a time frame for when you will be doing this. Do not expect the employer to contact you. Address your letter to a person. Identify who appropriate person/s might be through research and through networking. You can then ask for this person by name when you make your follow up phone call. top^ Writing to a recruitment agency It is recommended that you include two or three recruitment agencies as part of your job search strategy, asking their assistance in finding you a job. You do not have to wait for an advertisement to appear before contacting a recruitment agency. Write to them as soon as you start your job search. Be sure to select recruitment agencies that specialise in the industry or occupations that you are targeting. Recruitment agencies often do not advertise all the positions they are attempting to fill for the employers who are their clients. Instead they will attempt to fill these positions from candidates whose details they already have on their data base. In order to get onto their data base you will probably need to write to them and include your resume. As with other employment applications you will need to explain in your letter the type of role you are seeking, and outline the skills, knowledge and experience you would bring to such a role. Your approach in the letter is to assist the agency to sell your services to an employer. Be aware that most recruitment agencies are pleased to work with candidates who are seeking employment under various conditions. This includes permanent, full time roles, full time, fixed term contracts, part time and casual work. You will need to indicate in your cover letter what your preferences are in this regard. Tip: It sometimes helps to be flexible about the basis on which you might be employed by an organisation. There are many examples of people commencing their career with an organisation on a contract basis, or even as a part time or casual employee who have subsequently been offered a full time, permanent position. top^ Email cover letters With the increasing use of employment advertising on the internet and  electronic job application processes it is quite likely that you will be using an email in which to write a covering letter. If you are writing an email cover letter it is even more important to be clear and concise in what you write. Generally the reader will not want to have to work their way through large blocks of text to find out why you are writing and what you have to offer. This means you should aim to confine the content of your email into a single screen sized page. Some guidelines to follow: Use the subject line to clearly convey your purpose in writing. Explain in the first sentence why you are writing.  In dot point form provide a very brief summary of your key selling points – your relevant skills, knowledge and experience. In your closing sentence indicate that you are looking forward to meeting them in the interview where you can further demonstrate your capabilities. top^ Keep good records  When you begin to seriously look for employment it is possible that you will prepare numerous, and different versions of cover letters, your resume and other documentation associated with your application. Should you be invited to attend an interview, or an employer contacts you by telephone (with or without notice) to conduct a screening interview, it will be imperative that you are able to quickly locate and refer to the information you have given that employer. A good filing system will assist you to do this. Keep a separate file for each job application. Include in this file: The job advertisement. Job or person specifications. Any notes or worksheets associated with the position. A copy of the cover letter, resume and any other documentation you send to the employer.
